This is an image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope of a large, glowing bubble of gas and dust known as a planetary nebula. It is located in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan, about 5,000 light-years away from Earth.
The bubble is the result of a star in the last stages of its life. When the star ran out of fuel, it began to shed its outer layers, which are now expanding into space. The intense ultraviolet radiation from the star's core is causing the gas in the bubble to glow.
The bubble is about 2 light-years across and is expanding at a speed of about 10 kilometers per second. It is expected to dissipate in a few thousand years.
